BAME Homelessness Research Intern

We are currently recruiting for our first of three paid research interns to undertake independent research on issues of race and homelessness in the UK as part of our exciting new Homelessness and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Groups in the UK: A knowledge and capacity building programme.

Based anywhere in the UK, the post is for 9 months and will be paid at the London Living wage. It provides the post holder with a unique chance to undertake their own research project with support from the I-SPHERE team and an advisory group of experts in the field of homelessness and racial discrimination. It is a chance to delve deep into a related issue, shine a light and make recommendations that can make a difference in tackling racial inequalities in housing and homelessness.

The internship is funded by The Oak Foundation and the post holders will follow in the steps of fantastic previous interns who’s research has made headlines and brought about real impacts.

Amy Bristow recently completed an internship with us on Meeting the housing needs of BAME households in England: the role of the planning system Her research identified issues of structural racism in the planning system and provided a series of recommendations for the profession. The research has featured across a wide range of mainstream and housing professional media such as Inside Housing Inside Housing – Insight – How planning is failing to address race inequality in housing and the Housing Quality News https://hqnetwork.co.uk/hqm. It is raising awareness of key issues impacting on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups – the first step to achieving change.

Amy thoroughly enjoyed her internship – learning about research design and methods, meeting and interviewing people, analysing, writing and presenting her results. She says “I’ll be very jealous of the new interns who get to work on this project – I can’t recommend this opportunity enough and would encourage anyone thinking of applying to go for it!!”
